The AGI Regional Conference aims to serve as a forum for researchers and physicians dedicated to hereditary ataxias in Latin America.
The AGI Regional Conference will provide an overview of the current state of the art in ataxia research and care in this important region of the world, particularly at this important stage before widely available management practices are established. To ensure broader access to diagnosis and established care for Latin American populations, collaboration among researchers across countries in the region is essential. Only through a strong network for sharing information on ataxia cases—one that depends on both access to diagnosis and active interaction among researchers—will individuals with ataxia in Latin America be able to contribute their unique characteristics to scientific knowledge and gain opportunities to participate in clinical trials.
Why is the inclusion of minorities and underrepresented populations important for the rest of the world? It is worth emphasizing that the strongest evidence is based on the most representative data. Ultimately, discoveries with relevance for all of humanity can emerge when previously underrepresented populations, such as those in Latin America, are more thoroughly studied.
